The Database Administrator III maintains and supports the database systems and databases associated with the Fredricks laboratory and Microbiome Research Initiative He/She handles day-to-day maintenance and administration tasks such as installations, upgrades, configurations, backup, recovery and troubleshooting of multiple systems, integration of data from multiple sources into a single system. He/She is responsible for summarizing data in the database through generation of periodic reports, and will take a lead in data visualization, creation of figures, and data integration. May also be involved in capacity planning, performance tuning and light development work.

This is a senior level position that reports to Dr. David Fredricks, and works under minimal supervision, works on complex research projects requiring advanced knowledge and skills in data management, analysis, and visualization. May act as a lead or mentor over less experienced individuals.

  • Serve as technical lead for large and complicated projects to provide new or improved database services

  • Install, configure, maintain and decommission database servers, databases, and customized applications. This includes upgrades, patching and migrations

  • Lead hardware/software evaluations for databases servers and database platforms

  • Fulfill day-to-day operational tasks associated with database and application support

  • Troubleshoot complex issues with database platforms, databases, and applications

  • Participate in hardware/software evaluations for databases servers, database platforms, and customer and enterprise applications on behalf of the research team.

  • Monitor and report on database and application usage and availability; remove/delete old or obsolete files/resources to ensure systems function properly

  • Control and limit database access in compliance with data security policies and best practices to maintain data integrity

  • Modify and monitor scripts to perform ETL (extract, transform and load)

  • Monitor database servers and queries for high performance.

  • Ensure technical documentation and diagrams remain current and accurate

  • Comply with departmental processes, such as change management, problem management or incident management

  • Work with scientific team to analyze and visualize data and results.

  • Contribute as co-author on manuscripts.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 6-9 years of directly related experience

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and server administration

  • Strong Analytical troubleshooting and problem solving skills in computational biology.

  • Strong facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills with multiple investigators, project managers, and scientific staff.

  • Competent use of desktop applications, including Microsoft Suite.


  • Previous work experience working in an academic research setting.

  • Exceptional ability to understand complex data and to visualize the results through generation of figures and diagrams.
